Sanofi backs out application for acomplia's sale in the U.S.
4 July 2007
French drug maker Sanofi-Aventis finally decided
to withdraw its application for acomplia's approval to be marketed
in the United States. And the move is believed to be a direct outcome
of the US FDA's advisory panels' refusal to recommend acomplia,
known generally as rimonabant, for sale in the United States.
Nearly two weeks back, the US FDA's advisory panel declared that
the drug should not be permitted as it may augment the odds of suicidal
thoughts and depression in some patients.
Sanofi articulated that now it would work more stringently in the
direction of the drug's resubmission.
