Sanofi's Acomplia Flattened By Indian Generics
29 May 2007
Sanofi-Aventis's acomplia
(Rimonabant), which is still waiting for the FDA's
approval to be sold in the United States, is dealing with stiff
competition engendered by its generic versions in India. In Indian
drug market, the two companies have started pulling up customers
with low-priced versions costing as little as 14 U.S. cents a pill.
India-based pharmaceutical companies namely Cadila Healthcare Ltd.
and Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd have initiated the promotion of
the drug's generic versions with the names Slimona and Rimoslim
respectively.
"Torrent is anticipating the sales of 100 million rupees ($2.5
million) in the very first year", said Torrent Pharmaceuticals's
spokesman Susim Mohanty
Paris-based Sanofi, who received the FDA approval for sale in Europe
last year, is still standing in the row to get green signal from
U.S. regulators for the drug, and is in stiff competition with Abbott
Laboratories' Meridia and Roche Holding AG's Xenical in addition.
The France's largest drug maker still does not have approval to
sell the drug in Indian market despite having submitted an application
to the drug authorities last summer.
"It is quite early to enlighten what kind of policy we will employ
for the launch of Acomplia in India,'' said Jean Marc Podvin, Sanofi's
spokesman. "We have filed an application for registration but it
is still not approved"
Cadila started selling its generic version on 5.50 rupees and where
as Torrent's pill is available on 8 rupees.
